«Volatile Gravity» for drumset and orchestra was commissioned by the Basel Sinfonietta and will be first performed by Jojo Mayer, solo drumset, and the Basel Sinfonietta conducted by Baldur Brönnimann, on 27 June 2021 at 7 pm at Stadtcasino Basel (CH), alongside works by Frank Zappa. The concert will also be live-streamed. For more information and tickets: Jojo Zappa Rock'n Roll  and  https://de-de.facebook.com/baselsinfonietta

In «Volatile Gravity», the linear character of the drum part is brought in a relation with the spatial structure of orchestral sound. The involved musical energies interact with each other in search for a fragile equilibrium, as the title suggests. The dramaturgy of the piece is built along an imaginary urban space with several centers, arranged between built-up and barren, structured and open areas. In the course of the piece, the solo drum part, which contains a fair amount of improvisation, is being integrated into a larger orchestral architecture. With high frequency gestures alternating with widely spaced improvisational fields and moments of collective pulsation, «Volatile Gravity» is a musical drama with an uncertain outcome.

I'm thrilled that Jojo Mayer, one of the world's foremost and influential drummers, and the Basel Sinfonietta under Baldur Brönnimann, the leading Swiss orchestra for contemporary music, are teaming up in this premiere to bring «Volatile Gravity» to life.
