Century Variations in Innsbruck
"Century Variations" will be featured alongside works by Reed, Susato, Ravel, Bernstein and others. The concerts will take place at Saal Tirol at Congress Innsbruck/Austria, on 12 April 2025 at 7.30 pm and on 13 April 2025 at 6 pm. Further information can be found here .
"Century Variations" will also be the set test piece for the Tyrolean Landeswertungsspiel in Fall 2025, which also takes place in Innsbruck .

Im Jahr 2025 feiern die Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten ihr 375-jähriges und der Tiroler Blasmusikverband sein 100-jähriges Bestehen. «Century Variations» entstand so als gemeinsamer Auftrag und ist eine freie Fantasie über Heinrich Isaacs berühmtes Lied «Innsbruck ich muss dich lassen». Die Uraufführung erfolgte im April 2025 durch die Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten unter ihrem musikalischen Leiter Raimund Walder.
Zu Beginn hat die Musik einen feierlichen Charakter, als Erinnerung daran, dass zwei hohe Jubiläen Anlass für die Neukomposition gaben. Bald aber entwickeln sich lebhaftere Motive sowie eine pulsierende Rhythmik, die den raschen Teil prägen. Nach einer Überleitung folgt ein längeres, in sich gekehrtes Adagio, in dem zunächst einzelne Soloinstrumente Motive aus Isaacs Lied weiterspinnen. Danach entfaltet sich im ganzen Orchester ein leuchtender Klangstrom. Nachdem sich die Musik gänzlich beruhigt hat, tauchen wieder die früheren, rhythmischen Motive auf, nun zunächst verteilt auf Percussion und Bläser. Die Musik steigert sich sodann zu einem energischen Tutti, bevor Isaacs Lied verdichtet in Form eines breiten Chorals erscheint. So umschreibt das Stück ansatzweise eine musikalische Geschichte von Abschied und Rückkehr. Eine rasche Coda bringt das Stück zu Ende.Oliver Waespi

In 2025, the Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten is celebrating its 375th anniversary and the Tiroler Blasmusikverband its 100th anniversary. ‘Century Variations’ was thus created as a joint commission and is a free fantasia on Heinrich Isaac's famous song “Innsbruck ich muss dich lassen”. It was premiered in April 2025 by the Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten under its musical director Raimund Walder.
At the beginning, the music has a solemn character, reminding us that two important anniversaries gave rise to the new composition. However, more lively motifs and a pulsating rhythm soon develop and characterize the fast section. A transition is followed by an extended, introverted Adagio, in which various solo instruments reflect on motifs from Isaac's song. A luminous stream of sound then unfolds throughout the orchestra. After the music has calmed down completely, the earlier rhythmic motifs reappear, now initially distributed between the percussion and wind instruments. Later, the music builds up to an energetic tutti before Isaac's song appears condensed in the form of a broad chorale. In this way, the piece describes a musical story of farewell and reunion. A fast coda brings the piece to a close.
